Don Kelly argues with home plate umpire Edwin Jimenez after a missed ball/strike call Friday night in San Diego.
Home plate umpire Edwin Jimenez blew a ball/strike call that turned what should've been a rally-sustaining, game-tying, bases-loaded walk by Henry Davis in the eighth inning into the Pirates' 3-2 loss to the Padres tonight here at Petco Park.
Don Kelly was ejected for arguing the call, Andrew McCutchen stood atop a dugout step with his arms folded to stare down Jimenez for an entire inning and, after the game, he and hitting coach Matt Hague became heated with crew chief Andy Fletcher as the umpires walked off the field near the visiting dugout.
"We have to earn it," McCutchen would say in the clubhouse. "We have to earn it to get those calls. The way you earn it is by going out, playing good baseball and winning games. If you don't do that, that's the type of thing that's gonna happen."
Mitch Keller allowed three earned runs on three hits over six innings. McCutchen and Bryan Reynolds each had two hits, the latter adding a walk and RBI.
• Have won six of the past 10 games • Lost 21 of past 31 dating to April 26 • Now 9-11 since Kelly became manager
