Pirates 10, Diamondbacks 1: Offense backs Skenes in big way
Paul Skenes dazzled and Henry Davis contributed to another offensive explosion as the Pirates had 11 hits and four extra-base hits in a 10-1 win over the Diamondbacks today at Chase Field.
Five of those runs came in the sixth inning when five consecutive hitters reached safely: Isiah Kiner-Falefa's double down the right-field line drove in two, Bryan Reynolds' triple scored one and Andrew McCutchen and Ke'Bryan Hayes both drove in a run, as well. Oneil Cruz hit a two-run shot in the eighth for good measure. Davis was one of three who had a multi-hit game, but six drove in at least one run in the Pirates' second straight win.
The 1:1 battery of Skenes and Davis carved through the Arizona lineup. Skenes received a warm ovation from fans as he walked off the mound after throwing 6 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and striking out seven. He lowered his season ERA to 2.15 and picked up his first win since holding the Dodgers scoreless April 25 in Los Angeles.
"It was great for him," Don Kelly said. "I think the one thing we see is he doesn't change. He continues to do the same thing out there, whether he's not getting the support or like today, he did. To be efficient, establish his fastball, use all of his pitches. Threw it for strikes. Mixed it in and out. Henry did a great job game-calling with him. He did what he does every time out there. He's really good."
• Have won six of the past nine games • Lost 20 of past 30 dating to April 26 • Now 9-10 since Kelly became manager
