Andrew McCutchen sent a broken-bat single into right field in the eighth inning, and the Pirates beat the Phillies, 2-1, today at PNC Park for their first three-game winning streak of the season and first series sweep.
Paul Skenes limited Philadelphia to one unearned run, two hits and a walk over 7 2/3 innings, striking out seven. He now owns a 1.88 ERA after his 11th quality start. In his previous meeting with the Phillies across the commonwealth May 18, he allowed one run over eight innings and lost.
"It was pretty good overall," Skenes said of this start. "Had to grind through it a little bit at times, but I was happy with it. It just comes down to making our pitches and executing when we need to."
In the second inning, JaredTriolo followed a one-out single by Ke'BryanHayes with an RBI double into right-center. In the eighth, McCutchen's hit followed a leadoff walk and steal by OneilCruz.
