Pirates 2, Cubs 1: Skenes battles, offense pulls through
Paul Skenes gutted out five scoreless innings and the offense pulled through late as the Pirates beat the Cubs, 2-1, in 10 innings today at Wrigley Field.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the 10th to drive home Adam Frazier for the winning run. David Bednar worked his ninth straight scoreless inning to close it out.
"Unbelievable. Obviously (Adam Frazier) is on second, Ke'Bryan (Hayes) puts a ball in play gets on first. Henry (Davis) goes for the bunt there, didn't get it down but stays in the at-bat and ended up getting a huge walk," Don Kelly said. "Then for Izzy to come through and drive that run in and Beddy to come in and close it off. There's so many other things throughout that game that were really good."
Skenes struck out five, scattered four hits and walked two as he maneuvered through the Cubs' lineup by stranding two runners on second. He was assisted in the fifth when Cruz, Kiner-Falefa and Davis teamed up on an exceptional relay to cut down Ian Happ at home.
• Won seven of past 11 games • 10-23 on the road • 17-16 since Kelly became manager
► THE NUMBER
0.87: Skenes' ERA over his past six starts
