Rangers 6, Pirates 2: More mistakes, more bad baseball
After a rough road trip, the Pirates' three-game home series against the Rangers got off to a rough start Friday night at PNC Park, falling to the Rangers by a score of 6-2. After sweeping the Phillies and taking two of three from the Marlins, the Pirates have now lost six of their last eight games, falling to 30-47 on the season.
The Pirates dug themselves into a hole early, spotting the Rangers a 2-0 lead after just two at-bats. After Josh Smith led off with a single, Oneil Cruz booted a line drive single by Sam Haggerty with the ball rolling far beyond him in centerfield, allowing Smith to score and Haggerty reach third base. Haggerty then scored on a wild pitch while Corey Seager was at the plate.
"He came in and missed it. In that moment, nobody feels worse than Oneil does," Don Kelly said of Cruz's error. "I think something that we talk about is we're going to misplay balls. That's going to happen. How do we react to it in the moment? And how do we react after? ... The energy, the effort in the rest of the game, I thought he made a good adjustment there and played hard the rest of the way, which is the expectation moving forward."
While Mike Burrows would settle down and muscle through 4 2/3 innings, he left the game with the Rangers up 4-2, giving up solo home runs to Adolis Garcia in the fourth inning and Seager in the fifth. At the plate, the Pirates had a difficult time figuring out Jacob deGrom. The only daylight the lineup ever found against the two-time Cy Young winner was during a two-out rally in the fourth. Back-to-back RBI singles by Joey Bart and Adam Frazier cut a Rangers' lead to 3-2, but the rally came up short when Alexander Canario got caught looking at strike three with the bases loaded.
