The Pirates have recalled Mike Burrows and sent Carmen Mlodzinski down to Class AAA Indianapolis.
Burrows will start tomorrow night’s series opener against the Brewers at PNC Park. This will be his first major-league start and second appearance after going 3 1/3 innings in relief against the Yankees in September.
Burrows has gone 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA — nine earned runs in 32 1/3 innings — over eight appearances (seven starts) at Indianapolis this season. At the time he was promoted, Burrows ranked second in the International League with a 1.02 ERA, 28 strikeouts and a 0.85 WHIP during the month of May. He also ranked third in the league with a .175 batting average against this month. Burrows was recalled from Indianapolis on April 24, but did not make an appearance before being optioned back to Indy a day later.
Mlodzinski has compiled a 1-4 record with a 5.67 ERA and 1.61 WHIP over nine starts this season. The converted reliever struck out 28 batters and walked 12 in 39 2/3 innings.
