After exiting anappearanceagainst the Rangers over the weekend with low back inflammation, RyanBorucki has resumed some light baseball activities, but has not resumed any throwing yet, ToddTomczyk said this morning.
The plan is for Borucki to be reassessed on Friday with the goal of beginning a throwing program when the team returns to Pittsburgh.
Without Borucki, the Pirates have just one left-handed relief option in the bullpen with CalebFerguson serving in that role. Borucki has a 5.26 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 29 appearances for the Pirates this season.
Additional updates from Tomczyk:
• TimMayza (left shoulder lat muscle strain) and JustinLawrence (right elbow inflammation) are involved in similar throwing programs at the moment. Both have progressed out to 75, 80 feet and there have been good initial responses to the throwing volume and intensity.
"The goal for them this week is to progress out to 90, 95 feet by week's end of their throwing program," Tomczyk said.
• ColinHolderman (right thumb inflammation) threw 50 to 55 pitches during a three-inning simulated game in Florida.
"The early responses were good and the thumb is feeling good," Tomczyk said. "We'll see how he responds over the coming days and map out a progression for next week. Potential conversations around rehab games sometime next week."
• JohanOviedo (right lat strain) also threw 50 to 55 pitches over three innings during a simulated game earlier this week.
"Good tissue response and he's going to throw a side later this week," Tomczyk said. "We'll continue to map out game progressions for him early next week as well."
Tomczyk said a rehab assignment has not yet been formalized for Oviedo, but those conversations are forthcoming.
• JaredJones (elbow) continues to work on his range of motion. He'll continue some general strength and motion activities early next week. Tomczyk said he's coming along "very nicely" following his surgery.
• EndyRodriguez (right elbow inflammation) has begun range of motion exercises in Florida. The soreness from the PRP injection has subsided and he's taking part in some low-level strengthening and range of motion exercises, Tomczyk said. He'll continue to be monitored daily and progress through the rehab as indicated. Tomczyk said the hope is that Rodriguez will play again this season, but they're still learning as the weeks go by.
• EnmanuelValdez (shoulder) is about five weeks post-op and there is no change in his status. He's beginning some upper-level strength and conditioning and rehab exercises. He's still on track for a return to playing at six months time.
• MattGorski was placed on the 60-day injured list after sustaining a left hand injury with Class AAA Indianapolis about a month ago, Tomczyk said. He didn't require surgery, just rest and rehab. His return to full competition at the time of his placement on the IL was around 10 to 12 weeks.
"We're still early in that journey," Tomczyk said.
• AnthonySolometo did not pitch as scheduled during his rehab assignment with Class A Bradenton yesterday due to recurrent shoulder discomfort experienced during his pregame preparation, Tomczyk said. He is being assessed by the rehab team at Pirate City in Florida. Tomczyk said the hope is to have an update on his status by next week.
