Nick Gonzales wants to honor the late Dave Parker.
After learning of the death of the Pirates legend today, ahead of the Pirates' 9-2 win over the Mets at PNC Park, Gonzales, who wears Mr. Parker's No. 39, said it should be retired.
"Obviously, it was real unfortunate. I heard the news when I was in the stretch line. It just meant a little more playing today with that number. Personally, I think it should be retired. I think I should get a new number, honestly. I think that might happen at some point when some numbers open up. I think that number should be retired, for sure. He’s in the Hall of Fame. God bless his family and all of that."
The respect for Mr. Parker's contributions to Pittsburgh baseball are immense as Gonzales said, "I think that’s awesome. For what he did for this community, for Pittsburgh in general. The World Series MVP, all that stuff. It’s an honor just to wear it on my back."
Don Kelly on Mr. Parker's passing, "Before we start about the game, I just wanna recognize a great member of the Pirates' family today in Dave Parker and what he meant to the team, to the city. An icon here in Pittsburgh. Just wanna send our prayers out to his family and all the Pirates' fans that remember him playing and playing in huge games here. Just want to acknowledge that before we start on today's game."
Andrew McCutchen, the Pirates' resident legend: "It's the Cobra, right. The time he was here with the Pirates, he did some amazing things on the field. Part of being a World Champion here. Crazy numbers, back-to-back years where he won the batting title... He was a very big guy."
Cutch continued, "I remember one of the first times meeting him, you always have this thought of who they are or what they look like. I'd never seen him in person. Only seen video. A guy that big to be the hitter that he was. He wasn't necessarily Willie Stargell, but he was a hybrid of it. He was a guy that could do a little more than just hit. He can hit, he can hit for power and played a great outfield, as well."
