Tigers 9, Pirates 2: Heaney hit hard, Skubal deals

The Tigers took full advantage of their scoring opportunities and the Pirates couldn't solve reigning American League Cy Young Award winner TarikSkubal in a 9-2 loss in the first game of today's doubleheader at Comerica Park.
Detroit scored five of its runs in the first two innings against AndrewHeaney, who allowed seven earned runs on eight hits and three walks over four innings. GleyberTorres drove in a run with a second-inning sacrifice fly and RileyGreene drove in four more with a sac fly in the first and a bases-clearing double in the second. Torres added an RBI double and SpencerTorkelson contributed with a sac fly in the fourth. The Tigers added two more runs off ChaseShugart in the fifth, as ZachMcKinstry hit a solo homer and ColtKeith produced the team's fourth sacrifice fly of the day.
"Just not throwing strikes," Heaney said. "Pretty simple. Didn't get ahead, didn't work ahead and wasn't really aggressive. Just not good pitching."
The run support was plenty for Skubal, who struck out six and limited the Pirates to two runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings. AndrewMcCutchen had two of those hits with a first-inning single and second-inning double. He drove in a run with a groundout in the fifth and TommyPham added an RBI on a sac fly in the sixth.
