White Sox 10, Pirates 4: More awfulness, more anger
JUSTIN BERL / GETTY
The White Sox's Josh Rojas hits an RBI double in the fifth inning Saturday at PNC Park.
Despite their ugly overall record, the Pirates' pitching staff has ultimately served as a strength while the offense has failed time and time again this season. But now, it's the pitching that's producing weak results, as it did in tonight's 10-4 loss at the hands of the White Sox in front of a sellout crowd at PNC Park.
The Pirates, who have now lost 10 of their last 11 games, held a 4-2 lead heading into the sixth after MikeBurrows struck out six and allowed two runs on three hits over five solid innings. CalebFerguson, Isaac Mattson and Carmen Mlodzinski combined to allow eight runs on 10 hits over four innings in relief. Their poor efforts out of the bullpen prompted multiple chants of "SELL! THE! TEAM!" from fans that were among the 38,041 in attendance.
"It's hard, and it's something we haven't dealt with. The pitching has been so good," DonKelly said. "Giving up 10 last night, giving up 10 again tonight, and when the pitching has kept us in so many games this year... it's tough whenever you lose a game that you're ahead and you have to turn it over to the bullpen who has been so reliable all year. They're going to continue to be reliable. Those guys in the back end have done a great job, and I have full confidence in them to do that."
The Pirates put together a better offensive performance than they did Friday night, but it was all for naught. They produced 13 hits and scored their runs on a two-run double by Ke'Bryan Hayes and an RBI single by Isiah Kiner-Falefa in the fourth, and an RBI double by Nick Gonzales in the fifth.
