The No. 15 Panthers were eliminated from the ACC tournament Wednesday, as No. 7 North Carolina State shot 57 percent from the floor en route to a 98-88 win at Spectrum Arena in Charlotte, N.C.
There was not much statistical difference between the teams, with the Panthers putting forth one of their best offensive outputs of the season. Not a good three-point shooting team, Pitt made 12 of 27 shots beyond the arc, one fewer than the Wolfpack. The Panthers had three fewer field goals than NC State, out-rebounded them 23-22, had three fewer free throws made. With margins that this it comes down to mistakes, and the Panthers turned to ball over too often — 11 times — then struggled to sustain offense in the second half, after rallying to overcome a 14-point first-half deficit to enter the half dow 51-50.
Cameron Corhen saved the best game of his collegiate career for his last, leading the Panthers with 27 points and nine rebounds. Omari Witherspoon had 19 points and Nojus Indrusaitis added 19 off the bench. The Panthers had two other seniors play their last career games: Damarco Minor had 3 points and 4 assists, while Barry Dunning Jr. had 11 points and 4 rebounds.
The Panthers finish the season 13-20, just the fourth 20-loss season in program history, and speculation about Jeff Capel's future as head coach is rampant.
