Damarco Minor drove the lane missed a jump shot, then put back his own rebound with 0.7 seconds remaining to give the No. 15 Panthers a 64-63 upset of No. 10 Stanford in round 1 of the ACC Tournament at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.
Minor's bucket came in response to Stanford guard Ebuka Okorie's and-one on the other end that wiped out a 62-60 lead with 23 seconds remaining. Okorie, who leads the ACC with 23.1 points per game, was guarded by Minor for 35 minutes, who limited him to 14 points, just two in the first half and three on the layup and free throw before Minor's own heroics.
The Panthers came out fast, taking a 31-23 lead into halftime, which ended up being the largest lead by either side in the game. The back-and-forth second half saw Pitt struggle from the field, but big shots were made late, including a three-pointer from Barry Dunning Jr. with just over a minute left, to give Pitt the 62-60 lead, just one of three Panthers baskets beyond the arc in 17 attempts.
Dunning led all scorers with 16 points and was the top rebounder with eight. The Panthers dominated the glass in the game, out-rebounding the Cardinal, 41-28, including 20 offensive rebounds, none bigger than the two on their final possession that led to Minor's game-winner.
There is a short turnaround for Pitt, which faces No. 7 N.C. State at noon Wednesday.
