In a moment that transcended football, redshirt sophomore quarterback EliHolstein arrived at UPMC Children's Hospital last week for more than just a standard visit. Holstein stood alongside 13-year-old JuliaEspinosa, a multi-organ transplant recipient who made the empowering decision to shave her head after losing most of her hair during treatment. In solidarity, the Zachary, La., native shaved his own head alongside her to send a powerful message: she isn't in this fight alone.
"It was the least I could do to show support," Holstein said. "It's a big stepping stone in her treatment and process of getting better, and I wanted to show her she's not alone. Pitt Football's behind her. The whole Pitt community is behind her."
With stylist NoelleHorton on hand, the hospital became a makeshift salon as Julia confidently took the clippers to Holstein's hair.
Quarterback Eli Holstein made a special visit to UPMC Children's Hospital last week in a powerful show of support. 💙💛
Holstein first met the Espinosa family in 2024 during a visit to UPMC Children's Hospital with fellow Pitt quarterbacks, offensive coordinator KadeBell and head coach PatNarduzzi. But the family's relationship with Pitt Football stretches back even further. Since relocating to Pittsburgh in 2022, the Espinosas have formed a deep and lasting connection with the program. Julia has served as an honorary captain at three home games, and the family frequently attends practices together.
They may not be Pittsburgh natives or Pitt alumni, but the Panthers have become part of their extended family. In fact, the afternoon began with a surprise tribute video that featured a heartfelt message from former Pitt quarterback and current Cleveland Brown KennyPickett, who was a familiar presence at Children's Hospital during his time at Pitt. The video also included clips of family and friends shaving their heads in solidarity with Julia.
"It was so amazing to have a community that's so supportive of Julia and our family," said ValentinaEspinosa, Julia's sister. "It's really nice to know there are always people out there rooting for her and for all of us."
This wasn't just a feel-good moment; it was a powerful example of the compassion and leadership at the heart of Narduzzi's program.
As the Panthers prepare for the challenges of the 2025 season, Holstein reminded everyone that character matters just as much as stats.
"NIL and stuff like that, it's great, but there's a lot of real-world stuff going on out there," Holstein said. "Doing things like this keeps you grounded and close to people you want to be around. That's a great family. I love hanging out with them, doing things with them. I'm going to be with that family as much as I can and hopefully win for them."
