During the time he spent at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex as a member of the Pitt roster, BenSauls watched ChrisBoswell from across the way, appreciating how he went about his business and all that he has accomplished in becoming one of the NFL's top kickers.
Aside from the occasional greeting of one another, Sauls has never had any in-depth discussions with Boswell. But now that he has signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent, Sauls hopes he'll get the chance to change that.
“To be able to come over here and hopefully pick his ear and learn from the best, you can’t get that anywhere else. I think that’s a second-to-none opportunity,” Sauls said following the second day of the Steelers' rookie minicamp this morning. “To be able to do that, I’m extremely excited about it.”
Sauls will always be linked to Boswell considering their names sit atop the list of kickers with the longest field goals in Acrisure Stadium history. Boswell set the record with a 59-yard field goal back in 2022 and Sauls kicked the second-longest with a 58-yard field goal last October, tying a program record in the process.
"We both appreciate the fact that we're kickers here in Pittsburgh," Sauls said. "I'm excited to build that relationship hopefully and him mentor me, if that's available, of course. But at the end of the day, we're here, we've got a job to do and we're going to do it."
Sauls played in 53 career games during his five seasons at Pitt (2020-24), converting 52-of-64 (.813) career field goals. He had a team-high 107 points in 2024, converting 21-of-24 field goals and each of his 44 extra-point tries. Sauls led the nation with three field goals of 55-plus yards and his six field goals of 50-plus yards set a single-season school record.
While he concluded his collegiate career as one of the best kickers in Pitt history, that's all in the past for Sauls. Now, he's looking toward the future with excitement.
“It’s about a clean slate, starting new and building myself up from here," he said. "I’ve got a good foundation to do it, and I’m excited to do it."
