Consider this a friendly reminder that, after the Pirates' 4-2 loss in Milwaukee that left them at 32-50 just past the season's midpoint, they're now halfway to a hundred losses. Which I point out principally to emphasize that's still not the worst possible outcome for the rest of this long-since godforsaken summer.
No, that'd be Ben Cherington being allowed to trade pitching for hitting.
It's already gross enough that he's still got the job, given the damage he's done to date and, from the opposite perspective, the potential pluses of bringing in a new general manager now to begin the deep-dive evaluation any new executive will need to do.
But for Cherington to operate with any significant latitude from Bob Nutting and/or Travis Williams to trade any pitcher for any hitter, after Cherington's butchered everything associated with a bat for half a decade now ... wow, no.
So no, he shouldn't be allowed to move Mitch Keller to any team anywhere. Nor David Bednar. Nor Bubba Chandler, certainly, nor any other prospect from here to Santo Domingo.
Why?
3. This GM could watch a young Mike Trout take batting practice and come away signing the soft-tossing coach behind the L-screen.
2. Until Jared Jones is back, no one can know what to make of the long-term prognosis for this rotation as a whole, and the last thing the franchise needs is to fritter away its lone strength.
1. It'd be akin to putting an arsonist in charge of fire prevention. Enough already.
