From the very day that DK Pittsburgh Sports was launched 11 years ago, we've not sought a solitary penny from those actively serving in our U.S. Armed Forces.
And we never will.
As I've told the tale a time or two, on the very first night we were online, I noticed on our Google Analytics that we were being read in Kazakhstan, Afghanistan and a couple other places that didn't really make much geographic sense ... until I figured out -- and would later have verified many times over -- that those were our men and women at bases overseas.
About a year later, readers began asking why we weren't doing likewise for military veterans and, within that, a few offered to cover the cost of those subscriptions themselves. From there was born our annual Military Drive to pay for 1,000 such subscriptions for anyone who's served at any time.
So, if you're active-duty or a veteran, here's how to claim yours for free ... with OUR thanks.
And if you're interested in covering the cost for a veteran, at $20 each, please email me directly at DK@DKPittsburghSports.com with how many you'd like so that I can thank you personally, after which I'll forward your email to Dali for processing.
On behalf of our entire global community at this app/site, now touching 155 countries, thanks already to those who've already contributed the 50 that'll represent this year's starting point. The goal, again, is 1,000, and the cutoff, as ever, will be Veterans Day, Nov. 11.
DUBLIN MEETUP!
We haven't had many subscriber meetups on the road for some time, mostly because the Downtown HQ/shop offers a chance to connect anytime anyone from outside Pittsburgh happens to be visiting.
But Ireland?
After all the queries about this?
Yeah, we're doing that. Three of us will be there -- Chris Halicke, Dali and myself -- and, hopefully, you will, too, if you're making it across any of the various ponds.
I don't yet know if it'll be on the Friday or Saturday of that week, but it'll be one of the two. And I do know definitively that it'll be at my preferred Starbucks in the heart of Dublin -- 56 Bachelors Walk -- right up against the brilliant, historic O'Connell Bridge.
Keep checking Site Stuff each Saturday for more details.
INSIDE THE WORKS
• Yes, we have places to comment on college football games. There's one in each school's feed right now, set up by Bob Maddamma, and there'll be follow-ups aplenty once each game ends. As for in-game updates ... those will be up to you in comments!
• We have schedule/results pages now for the Steelers, Pirates AND Penguins. The scores that you see in those schedule pages link to our own game-center files, so it's a useful reference.
• Paying subscribers live here ad-free. If you aren't subscribed yet or if your subscription's expired: This is our subscribe page. From there, make sure you're logged in, tap on the link, and thumb down to the bottom for the SUBSCRIBE button to buy/restart at the monthly or annual level. We also offer mega-discounts for students, seniors and special workers.
• Feel free to add a generous review on our Google business listing, our Appleand Spotify podcast channels and, arguably most important, our own official app pages, whether it's the Apple or Android version. It makes a difference.
