For anyone who doesn't know, Paul Skenes' workload has been dialed back by a management plan intended to spell him through the All-Star break, and that began three starts ago.
So, for anyone complaining as if there aren't reams of research to support pitch limits ...
"Yeah, we have a plan," Don Kelly would say afterward of why Skenes was pulled at 78 pitches after five innings, after which Carmen Mlodzinski gave up the game's lone run on a Randy Arozarena blast to left in the sixth. "We want Paul on the mound. He wants to be on the mound, but also, he's in the top-five in innings pitched in the big leagues. Just like we've talked about, just findng ways to manage that with him and for him, and to make sure we have him for the full season and make sure he's in a good spot."
I don't back this management on much, but I will on this. Skenes is now fourth, actually, in Major League Baseball at 116 innings, it's his first full year in the bigs, and, oh, by the way, would anyone really want to risk hurting him in a season that's long since been blown to bits with a lame-duck GM presiding?
Come on.
He knew about this, by the way, and took no issue with it.
