In the early days of our operation, we'd often be told by web designers that we were too home-page-centric. And that's the term they'd use, too, pointing to how everything we offered was available off a single page rather than spread out over several.
We ignored that for a long time.
And then, as of a couple years ago with the addition of our team-by-team feeds, we didn't.
I've got a crazy set of numbers to share this week, in that these were the percentage breakdowns of entry-point page views on our app/site over the past seven days:
Now, never mind the striking figure for hockey in the week that Marc-Andre Fleury returned. That's another discussion for another day.
What hit us was how similar those entry-point figures were. And to be clear, that's the first page that a visitor to the app/site sees upon showing up.
Less than a quarter arrived via the home page! Whereas almost 40% arrived directly through one of the team feeds for our three major-league teams!
What that tells us, more than anything, is that people are bookmarking the team feeds and going directly where they want, bypassing the home page. But it also underpins that we can see data illustrating how the buttons at the bottom of the app are the second option after getting to the home page.
This has us thinking of ways to make such preferences even easier to access.
If you're interested in covering the cost for a veteran, at $20 each, please email me directly at DK@DKPittsburghSports.com with how many you'd like so that I can thank you personally, after which I'll forward your email to Dali for processing.
INSIDE THE WORKS
• Hockey's on the horizon, and Taylor Haase and I'll double-team the Penguins' opener Tuesday in Manhattan, then the next two games, as well, at PPG Paints Arena.
• Prefer to see your favorite college on the app's home page? Open your profile at the top left corner, tap Customize App and choose any team in the bottom half of that field to replace Pitt. (Or hey, just leave Pitt there if you're a Pitt fan, right?)
• We have schedule/results pages now for the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates. The scores you see in those schedule pages link to our own game-center files, so it's a useful reference.
• Paying subscribers live here ad-free. If you aren't subscribed yet or if your subscription's expired: This is our subscribe page. From there, make sure you're logged in, tap on the link, and thumb down to the bottom for the SUBSCRIBE button to buy/restart at the monthly or annual level. We also offer mega-discounts for students, seniors and special workers.
• Feel free to add a generous review on our Google business listing, our Appleand Spotify podcast channels and, arguably most important, our own official app pages, whether it's the Apple or Android version. It makes a difference.
BACK TO BUSINESS
• Our page-view numbers were 872,711, with 48,690 unique users over the most recent full seven-day span, Sept. 26-Oct. 2. Our most-read original piece was Taylor'scoverage of Fleury's return, at 37,130.
