We're growing. We're expanding coverage. And yeah, we're hiring, too.
In fact, the first hire could be welcomed as soon as the coming week, but I digress.
This is all part of the DKPS 2.0 project I've been talking about for a spell in this space, and it's one that, to repeat from the most recent reference, we plan to have it ready to fire off in March. From there, it'll all fly by April in time for the beginning of Major League Baseball, the NFL Draft and ... hey, do I hear Stanley Cup playoffs?
A few bulleted concepts on 2.0, all of them vague since, again, there's a ways to go:
• There'll be a heavy lean on visuals. Not just our shows. We want to you to feel like you're with us everywhere we go. We want to be the app that takes you inside.
• Of course there'll still be writing. It'll be tighter, it'll be more frequent, and both of those traits will make the reading experience better.
• Faster, faster, faster. Nobody should be waiting on us. People depend on this outlet for news when it happens, not when we get to it.
• A far more aggressive outreach to the outside. Like in-your-face. Multiple platforms. We've been No. 1 in the market for online everything for three years, and it's about time we began acting like it.
• A clearer distinction between a subscription to our app/site and the exponentially increasing YouTube subscriptions, which can't be merged in any way. Gotta figure that one out.
• This is the only one that's influenced by the Post-Gazette ceasing operations May 3: Taking a hard look at what coverage we might want to add, without, of course, putting ourselves into peril. Can't be all things to all people, but maybe there's more. I have one beat in mind, in particular, but it'd be pricy.
• More multimedia programming? Well, the first priority is doing right by all the current programming. Dali's got a lot she wants to do at the production levels, and Chris Halicke and I've got ideas toward popping the shows themselves. And it'll all be built around both of the Double Shot shows as our anchors. Those have done very well, including the new Penguins one, and we're legit excited about that.
• Lots and lots and lots of video from the scene. No one else gets to the places we do, and we've got to share that -- plus our reporting -- from those places soon after events.
• For the readers-only: A return to the old Dale Lolley-style Friday Insider format, where all our staffers contribute each week. It'll be our franchise feature more than ever.
We'll be using the Olympic period, Dali and I, to wrap all this up. Soon enough.
SPECIAL HQ/SHOP HOURS
With the Steelers and Penguins both home this weekend, our Downtown HQ/shop open Saturday-Monday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., equipped with tons of stuff to satisfy both teams' fans!
Come see us, dammit!
INSIDE THE WORKS
• Emojis and up-cups/down-cups will remain turned off on our live files until our friends at BoomPress are convinced they won't contribute to in-game crashes. It's not a big sacrifice and, so far, it's worked.
• We're all working to clean up the Asylum from the few bad seeds that've made themselves too comfortable there for too long. As we tell them, criticize the teams, the athletes, whatever ... but go after each other, get political, get racist ... and get gone. It's a family venture, and it's a family forum.
• Feel free to add a generous review of any aspect of our business on our Google business listing, or on our Appleand Spotify podcast channels. Makes a significant difference.
BACK TO BUSINESS
• Our video views for our most recent full seven-day span, Jan. 2-8, were an all-time record 358,448. Our most-watched program was the Sunday night Live Shot of Steelers from Acrisure Stadium, at 26,963.
• Our page-view numbers, also for Nov. 28-Dec. 4, were 775,007. Our most-read original piece was my Grind, also from Acrisure, at 22,740.
• The Downtown HQ/shop's usually open Tuesday-Saturday, 12-6 p.m. -- see above for special hours this weekend! -- while our company-themed merch can all be had in our online store.
