A few days ago, in response to soaring travel costs, I put forth a vague goal of selling a big bunch of new subscriptions. And to be completely candid, that went nowhere.
So I then floated the concept of gift subscriptions. And, as I'd hear from a lot of you, that'd be fine ... if they had someone who'd want one and didn't already have one.
Finally, at the suggestion of a couple of you, I revived our Special Workers Drive and ... boom!
We had 64 just like that!
What's funny is that it wasn't even a formal push. It was brought up in a commenting thread related to sending Taylor Haase to cover the AHL playoffs in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. -- above our already-blown travel budget -- and the contributions began coming immediately.
For those unfamiliar, a year ago, we started a Special Workers Drive to offer deeply discounted subscriptions to teachers, police, fire, EMTs, nurses and volunteers, and we ended up having 549 claimed. Many of those people shared that they'd never otherwise have signed up, so it proved to be plenty worthwhile.
And to those who got us started with those 64, thank you!
INSIDE THE WORKS
• Travel ahead: José Negron will fly to Houston to cover the Pirates in the coming week, and Taylor Haase will pick up the second leg of that trip by flying to Atlanta.
• We still have a few long-sleeve NFL Draft hoodies/sweatshirts, and just a handful of caps ONLINE SHOP, with prices at HALF OFF, and shipping FREE! But hurry!
• They're not yet perfect, but our new baseball statistics, standings, schedule and boxscores are up and running on the app/site right now. And, of course, we'll add football and hockey once those seasons approach.
• There's also a new photo gallery effect to house Greg Macafee's work. It still needs tinkering, though, so it might vanish for a spell.
• A reminder: A subscription to this app/site covers only that, not to any memberships we offer on YouTube. And the same is true, obviously, in reverse. The reason: The commerce platforms have nothing in common.
• Feel free to add a review of any aspect of our business on our Google business listing, or on our Appleand Spotify podcast channels. Makes a real difference.
BACK TO BUSINESS
• Our page-view numbers for our most recent full seven-day span, May 22-28, were 617,397. Our most-read original piece was the staff's Friday Insider of eight days ago, at 9,249.
• Our video views, also for May 22-28, were 195,610. Our most-watched program was my Tuesday Daily Shot of Steelers on T.J. Watt's outlook, at 12,349.
