There are countless ways to have a responsible, rational conversation about the unthinkable scene tonight at PNC Park, where a fan leaped from his seat in the front row above the Clemente Wall, then plunged 21 feet to the crushed-lava warning track below.
So many questions to be asked, so many answers to follow.
In the moment, though, the only one that matters: He's in critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital with head injuries at the least, per our latest reporting. That's been all the word we have at this hour. When we know more, we'll share.
Also, when we know more -- a lot more -- we can have that conversation.
We can talk about the individual's clear leap, about his status/health, about the railing/glass that's right around waist-height for those standing in front of out, about the stadium never having had any such incident previously, about even a potential non-issue like whether the game should've continued ... all that stuff. Like I said, it'll take a lot more information.
We've seen the video. We won't share it, but we studied it. And still, there are just way, way, way too many questions.
Here's hoping the fan emerges from this just fine.
And here's applauding the Pirates' and Cubs' staffs who rushed to help, the Pittsburgh EMS crew that's always on-site for any major sporting event in the city, the Pittsburgh Police who also are always present and, of course, the doctors and nurses over at AGH.
As our very own Fred Rogers once immortally spoke, "When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers.' You'll always find people who are helping.”
We'll stay on it, obviously. I've assigned an extra reporter to the stadium for today's matinee finale, and we'll be there when both teams' clubhouses open at 10 a.m.
