The Steelers are releasing tight end Jonnu Smith, according to a report by ESPN. The move clears $7 million in cap space, leaving the team with $3.87 million in dead cap.
With the move, the Steelers now have an estimated $50.9 million in cap space, according to Spotrac.
Smith, 30, is coming off a very disappointing season after being acquired last summer in the Minkah Fitzpatrick trade with the Dolphins. After a 2024 season in which Smith caught 88 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns with Miami, Smith caught only 38 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns, averaging a ridiculously low 5.8 yards per catch.
Whether is was because of the offensive scheme, the rapport with Aaron Rodgers or anything else, Smith's fit was clunky from the very beginning. Deciding to cut Smith was sensible since he was due a $10.87 million cap hit. And with Mike McCarthy implementing his West Coast offense, there's no need for four tight ends, especially paying two of them more than $10 million per season.
