The Steelers are hiring Joe Whitt Jr. to be the team’s new assistant head coach and secondary coach.
Whitt, 47, has coached under Mike McCarthy for a total of 14 seasons — 11 with the Packers (2008-2018) and three with the Cowboys (2021-23). He most recently served as defensive coordinator with the Commanders under Dan Quinn, who was McCarthy’s defensive coordinator with the Cowboys in 2021-23.
Jason Simmons, who also worked with Whitt under Quinn the past two seasons, has already been hired as defensive pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach. So, with Whitt now joining the staff and having the secondary part of his title with the team, it’ll be interesting to see how the responsibilities are shared. However, the two having worked together for the past two seasons in Washington should aid in however McCarthy divvies up the workload.
