In an unexpected move, the Steelers have placed a rare unrestricted free agent tender on Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers, 42, remains an unrestricted free agent and is free to sign with any team. Should Rodgers sign the tender, he would receive a 10% raise, which would pay him about $15.5 million.
After confirming with team sources, the Steelers did this to ensure draft compensation in case Rodgers were to sign with another team. The deadline for draft compensation by losing unrestricted free agents to other teams passed on Monday. By doing this, the Steelers are ensuring they'd remain in line to receive a compensatory draft pick should Rodgers sign with another team. It also allows them to gain exclusive rights to him if he does not sign with another team before July 22, the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp.
Even with this tender, Rodgers can sign a contract with the Steelers prior to the start of training camp. So, if Rodgers called Omar Khan and/or Mike McCarthy tomorrow and told them he's going to play in 2026 and wants to sign a contract ahead of OTAs or mandatory minicamp, the two sides can get a deal done for that to happen.
