The Steelers have held formal meetings with Clemson cornerback Avieon Terrell and Tennessee cornerback Colton Hood, per sources.
In addition, sources have also confirmed the report of formal interviews with Ohio State safety Caleb Downs and Indiana cornerback D'Angelo Ponds.
All four players are highly-touted prospects in this year's class. One source I've spoken with here in Indianapolis has told me the Steelers expect Downs to be a top-10 pick. The other three are expected to be selected in the first two rounds. Terrell is a press-man cornerback that's already polished and can become an early starter. Hood is also a press-man cornerback that is also stout in supporting run defense. Ponds is an interesting slot cornerback option.
The Steelers are in an interesting position in the secondary. Safety will be a need for them, whether it be through free agency or the draft. Even though he's expected to be taken long before the Steelers are on the clock at 21st overall, having a formal meeting with Downs indicates their desire to turn over a lot of stones. Cornerback is a bit of a different story, especially if they can re-sign James Pierre in free agency. But if not, cornerback could become a legitimate need. That's why you're seeing the team make this position a focus this week at the Combine.
