The Steelers continue to wait for Aaron Rodgers to make a decision. And, for the first time throughout this process, Rodgers has revealed a specific reason why he's waited to sign with any team since being released by the Jets.
In April, Rodgers told Pat McAfee that he has off-the-field stuff that has his attention. And, in an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience this week, Rodgers provided a crucial detail.
"I've figured it out the last year when I’ve been in the weeds with these people who are close to me that have cancer," Rodgers said.
It's not a huge, long story. And, Rodgers didn't mention anything else on the podcast about his looming decision to sign with the Steelers, retire or ... do anything else. But, the only other part of this that we know is what Rodgers said on the Pat McAfee Show in April: That he doesn't want to sign with a team until he feels like he can fully commit to that team. Clearly, we're not there yet.
The question remains how long are the Steelers willing to wait. No mandatory team activities begin until minicamp on June 10. Until then, everything going on with the team is completely voluntary. And, the likes of T.J. Watt and Cam Heyward haven't been seen on the South Side yet. Perhaps the team is fine with Rodgers not being a part of this process.
As for exactly how much longer the Steelers are going to wait, Art Rooney II gave the same answer this week at the spring meeting as he did back at the annual meeting on April 1.
"A little while longer," Rooney said. "I'll say the same thing."
Meanwhile, the Steelers are working on contingency plans in case Rodgers opts to not sign with them. That being said, there is a lot of faith in Mason Rudolph. That's a big reason why they've waited this long for Rodgers.
