The Steelers hosted two more players today for pre-draft visits at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex: Miami (FL) quarterback Carson Beck and San Diego State cornerback Chris Johnson.
Beck is coming off a season in which he led the Hurricanes to an appearance in the national championship game, falling to Indiana. Beck has ideal size at 6-5 and 233 pounds, was a three-year starter in college and is advanced in his ability to go through his reads. However, there are significant questions about his arm after he sustained a UCL injury in 2024. The Steelers met with Beck at the NFL Scouting Combine, in which he impressed Mike McCarthy and Omar Khan, but could be bringing him in for medical purposes. Either way, regardless of where he ranks on big boards (No. 113 on Pro Football Focus), the Steelers obviously have interest in him. He could be a late Day 2 or early Day 3 option.
Johnson is one of the more impressive players in a deep cornerback class. He tested well at the Combine, running a 4.40 40-yard dash. He was also very productive for San Diego State in 2025, recording four interceptions while allowing completions just 41.9% of the time, according to PFF. He could be an early Day 2 pick, perhaps even sneaking into the end of the first round.
