The Steelers are in a period of transition. With Mike McCarthy as the new head coach, there will be some changes to how the team operates. A huge part of that is the construction of the roster. At the Combine, we'll get a peek at their priorities.
Yes, Omar Khan is ultimately responsible for putting the roster together. However, McCarthy's way of coaching a team will impact those decisions. Thus, the legwork done this week will tell us what's important. Three positions worth extra attention ...
• Wide receiver: This year's crop of pass catchers is pretty strong. While it lacks a runaway superstar-type, there's a ton of depth and a lot of talent. Watching to see how many receivers have meetings with the Steelers should tell us just how much they feel about the class, too. Names to watch: Makai Lemon, Jordyn Tyson, Denzel Boston, KC Concepcion.
• Quarterback: Both McCarthy and Khan have been openly vocal about how much they're excited about Will Howard. But, what if it's just a smoke screen? What if they like this class than most of the public? Or at least like a few guys and want to get a closer look at them? Names to watch: Ty Simpson, Garrett Nussmeier, Carson Beck, Drew Allar.
• Inside linebacker: This isn't the biggest need, especially if Patrick Queen is retained. This year's class of inside linebackers are very good. There could be a run on Day 2 of the draft. Names to watch: CJ Allen, Anthony Hill Jr., Jake Golday, Josiah Trotter, Deontae Lawson, Kyle Louis.
