Like most might have been yesterday, Cam Heyward is "shocked" the Steelers traded Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Dolphins in exchange for Jalen Ramsey, Jonnu Smith and a 2027 late-round pick swap.
The Steelers' captain spoke on his "Not Just Football" podcast this morning and explained that he was excited about adding Ramsey to the secondary, but then realized the reality of what his team gave up.
"You think it's gonna be really cool to see those DBs fly around and then I got the gut check of losing a really good teammate in Minkah Fitzpatrick," Heyward said. "I'm like, damn, I don't know how I feel about it. It's bittersweet. I've enjoyed playing with him. I was kind of just shook by it all. I'm excited about the new teammates, but I'm also sad to be losing a guy that I really respect in our locker room."
The blockbuster trade, which might be one of the biggest in franchise history, locked down the cornerback position as Ramsey joins Joey Porter Jr. and Darius Slay. The offense also benefits as Smith becomes another target for Aaron Rodgers.
Heyward was shocked when they first traded for Fitzpatrick back in 2019 and said he was equally shocked yesterday, saying, "it's going to be different."
"Guys are gonna have to step up. The great thing about Jalen, though, is he is ball savvy. He is able to play multiple positions. You've seen him play safety, you seen him play corner, you've seen him play nickel. He provides that flexibility for a defense. But, man, didn't expect to lose a teammate like that."
