No criminal charges will be filed against DK Metcalf for his altercation with Ryan Kennedy, a Lions fan, during the Steelers' Week 16 win over the Lions last season.
"After an extensive review of all the relevant evidence, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has determined that charges will not issue in this case," Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Friday. "The fan did not appear to be injured, nor did he seek medical attention at the game."
Metcalf was seen approaching Kennedy at the railing of the stands after Kennedy was allegedly heckling him and asking for an autograph. Metcalf grabbed his shirt to pull him closer, then shoving him backward. According to reports from the Detriot Metro area, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said it interviewed security staff, other fans who were near the incident, and video footage from multiple directions. Metcalf received a two-game suspension for "conduct detrimental to the NFL for initiating a physical confrontation with a fan."
This decision, however, is not stopping Kennedy or his representation from pursuing justice for himself through a $100 million lawsuit.
"The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office makes criminal charging decisions on a variety of factors, some of which are unrelated to whether a crime is committed, and to allocate limited resources," attorney Jon Marko said Friday. "The Prosecutor's decision in this case has no effect on the civil case. Everyone can see exactly what happened from the video evidence. We look forward to getting Mr. Kennedy justice through the civil case."
Metcalf's attorney, Mitch Schuster of Meister Seelig & Schuster, issued the following statement:
"The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has declined to bring charges against DeKaylin Metcalf related to the incident involving Ryan Kennedy on December 21, 2025. We applaud the decision and are thankful for the hard work and thorough investigation that led to this just result. We are confident that justice will also prevail in the civil claim involving Mr. Kennedy. As Mr. Metcalf’s counterclaim in the civil case makes clear, Mr. Kennedy’s hate-fueled conduct has no place anywhere, and especially not in professional sports."
