The Steelers begin their three-day mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. It's the first time the entire team will meet ahead of the 2025 season. This is when playbooks are installed and the team has its unofficial orientation before training camp begins July 23 at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa.
While this event is glorified OTAs, it is still a pretty big milestone ahead of the season. Again, the entire team is required to be in attendance. Should any player be absent, except for the rare occasions in which they are excused by the team, they are subject to fines.
Here are some things to watch for over the next three days:
1. Above all else, this will be our first glimpse of Aaron Rodgers in a Steelers uniform. Now that he's under contract, he's required to attend, and there's no reason to believe he'll skip anything this week. He's even supposed to address the media following Tuesday's practice. Since the Steelers' talks with Rodgers first began nearly three months ago, Rodgers will have a lot of questions to answer. And since he'll be the team's quarterback this season, those answers will carry a ton of weight. Mike Tomlin will also address the media this week, so we'll get his first remarks on his new quarterback, too.
2. Will T.J. Watt be in attendance? Heading into the final year of his contract, Watt is in the midst of negotiations for an extension. Those talks have yet to result in a new contract. Players have certain cards they can play in negotiations, including skipping minicamp and paying fines to send a message. Watt can definitely afford them. Even if Watt shows up, will he be a full participant in practice? Or will be do the hold-in thing, in which he participates in individual drills but sits out team drills. This is one way players can hold out without being subject to fines. In addition, whatever Watt says about the current contract talks will be a close second to Rodgers' remarks. After all, Watt is still the team's best and most impactful player.
3. This will also be the first time we see DK Metcalf in action with his new team. He's attended a few days of the voluntary offseason workout program, but skipped all of OTAs over the past two weeks. Those are voluntary, so he didn't have to be there, and he wasn't the only Steeler to skip all of those days. Even so, this week will be the first look at the team's new $150-million man, and he'll address the media this week, too. Shiny new toys are always fun in weeks like this.
4. It's difficult to report on this, but overall team participation in these practices is still something. I'm not talking about stats, such as how many touchdowns or interceptions Rodgers throws or anything of that sort. That means absolutely nothing this time of year. But, what's the feel of the team? What's the energy level? How are they communicating? What's the intensity level, regardless of what drills are taking place? Who stays after practice to get more work in, and for how long? Are we going to see a team that's going through the motions, like a bunch of students impatiently waiting for the final school bell to signal to start of summer vacation? Or are we going to see a team that's setting the tone six weeks early for training camp at Saint Vincent College?
5. While this isn't something to watch on the field, it will be worth keeping an eye on Omar Khan and any potential moves he might make. The Steelers are still looking for another playmaker in this offense, preferably a wide receiver. However, they've also been tied to Miami's Jonnu Smith and Atlanta's Kyle Pitts. We'll see if Khan is able to add that playmaker to the roster before minicamp concludes. If not, it might be something that drags on into training camp.
