We have yet to hear from Art Rooney II about the Steelers' season ending with yet another first-round loss in the playoffs. In the meantime, his brother, Jim Rooney, went on the Ross Tucker Football Podcast and gave his two cents on the state of the franchise and Mike Tomlin.
"I think it's an organization issue, not just Mike," Rooney said. "I think all of us are responsible for the outcomes, but I think we take responsibility. I don't want to get into excuse making, but the reality is we outperform the NFL mean at a greater rate than just about any team for the last 25 years."
Rooney, who primarily is an author and public speaker, only works with the team on occasion on the business side of things, not the football side. He admittedly did just one scouting trip for the team to Slippery Rock University and was never asked to go on one again.
In saying he wasn't trying to make excuses, he also noted the Steelers under Tomlin have had to deal with the likes of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes as the dominant quarterbacks in the AFC, making the road to the Super Bowl that much more difficult. Instead, Rooney pointed to the overarching success throughout Tomlin's tenure, which is coming up on nearly two decades.
"I think if this was a boxing match and you were judging the competition, not just looking at the winning percentage, you would say that we have performed in a harder circumstance than most and outperformed them," Rooney said. "Having said that, I understand no one wants to lose playoff games. The goal is to win the Super Bowl, and you have to get to there. You have to get to playoff games, which we do well, and you have to win playoff games, which we haven't."
