A really cool piece of news from the week is the possibility of NFL players participating in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
According to a resolution that will be voted on by owners next week during the league's spring meeting, contracted NFL players would be allowed to participate in flag football during the 2028 Olympic Games.
The 2028 Summer Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 14-30 of that year. Players are typically off during most of that period, but any flag football participants would, at most, miss the few week or so of training camp.
The resolution establishes several rules, subject to negotiations with the NFL Players Association and the Olympic Games. They include:
• A limit of one player per NFL team on each national team participating
• Allowing, in addition, a team's designated international player to play for his home country
• A purchase of league-wide insurance policies to provide injury protection for any player injured while participating in an authorized flag football activity related to the Olympics
• A salary cap credit for any player who is injured
• An expectation that Olympic flag football teams will establish medical staffs and field surfaces that comply with NFL minimum standards
• A schedule that "does not unreasonably conflict with an NFL player's league and club commitments."
The game of American football is growing internationally. The NFL allowing its players to participate on the world stage could be another great way to generate even more interest.
Which Steelers players would do best in flag football? Who would you like to see play, if any at all? Minkah Fitzpatrick looked good during the flag football game in the Pro Bowl Games earlier this year.
