Some think that Aaron Rodgers had no other choices than to sign with the Steelers. However, had the Rams not worked things out with Matthew Stafford, Rodgers could have very well been their next quarterback.
"Our first priority, which was consistently communicated was, 'Hey, let's work something out with Matthew,' and we were very fortunate it worked out that way," Sean McVay said this morning on Good Morning Football. "If that wasn't able to occur, then that was definitely conversations and a possibility for us. I have a ton of respect for the body of work. I've gotten to know Aaron and really enjoy the conversations and just the approach, the way that he thinks about the game and in life. That was a possibility."
Stafford's been the Rams' quarterback since 2021, when they went to the Super Bowl and defeated the Bengals. This past year, Stafford and the Rams gave the eventual champion Eagles a run for their money in the playoffs. It makes all the sense in the world to keep that relationship together.
Had that broken down, it also makes a lot of sense for them to pivot to Rodgers. McVay comes from the same Shanahan school of offense, though he's definitely gone his own way in recent years. Even so, there would have been a lot of similarities that would have made it a very interesting fit with Rodgers. And, Rodgers is a Southern California guy, so going from his place in Malibu to Los Angeles would have been really easy.
Obviously, that's not how it worked out. The Rams signed Stafford to a new contract and Rodgers is now a Steeler.
"Shoot, I know that there's a lot of people in Pittsburgh that are really excited that's come to fruition," McVay said. "I'm a big fan of his."
