The overall impression of Aaron Rodgers thus far during training camp, at least from his teammates' perspective, is he's just one of the guys.
Ben Skowronek says the thing that surprised him the most aboutRodgers is how down to earth he is:
"For being an A-list celebrity, stuff like that, he’s truly one of the guys," Skowronek said. "Just a down-to-earth guy. He shoots the s--- with you, stuff like that."
Just as he plays the game, earning the nickname "Dirtbag" from Arthur Smith, Skowronek is very blunt and straight to the point. No fluff or anything like that. So when he opens up about the way Rodgers not only welcomed a group of Steelers receivers during the summer to his place in Malibu, Calif., it means something a little different than someone else saying it.
"It was a good experience. We just talked so much ball, man. We had dinner. For four straight hours, just talking football, experiences, telling stories," Skowronek said. "We definitely built trust out there. Kind of broke the ice, I guess. I maybe walked on egg shells a little bit during mandatory minicamp. In Malibu, we really got to know each other on a deeper level and just built trust."
When there are a number of moving parts on offense, especially at quarterback and wide receiver, adding the likes of DK Metcalf to replace George Pickens, having that type of a meeting can do a lot for team chemistry. It wasn't just a throwing session. It was also something that clearly had a lasting impact.
Now, it's all about carrying that over into training camp. Rodgers and Metcalf are suitemates in Rooney Hall, which gives them extra time to build a bond that can carry over to the football field.
This is what training camp is for. While many will make a big deal about Rodgers throwing an interception on his first pass, the three weeks spent here at Saint Vincent College are about building a team, not counting stats.
