The Steelers and DeShon Elliott have agreed to a two-year, $12.5 million contract extension including $9.21 million in guarantees, according to NFL Network. This will keep him under contract through the 2027 season.
Elliott had a standout season in 2024, all after signing a cheap two-year, $6 million contract last offseason. Most notable, he racked up 108 tackles on 111 opportunities, setting the NFL Next Gen Stats record for tackle efficiency.
He was entering the final year of his contract, making him a prime candidate for a contract extension.
The Steelers prefer to have a three-safety package at their disposal for a "big" nickel defense, which is flexible to defend both the run and the pass. Elliott gives the Steelers an ideal safety who can both play in the box and defend the run, but also not be a liability in coverage. Last year, he had one interception and six passes defensed. His two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries also made him an ideal fit in the Steelers' priority for "splash" on defense, with a heavy emphasis on creating turnovers.
With Elliott signed to an extension, the next man up for one remains T.J. Watt. Those negotiations have dragged on and might not be resolved for a while. Calvin Austin III is also heading into the final year of his contract, and the Steelers have liked his growth over the past two seasons. He could be another candidate.
