Site Stuff: What a place this has become ☕

I see people all the time who ask how things are going with the new job. My answer is always the same: “Great.”

For 25 years, I was employed by the Observer-Reporter in Washington, Pa.. I still live there and see many of the same people on a day-to-day basis. Many of them are members of this site.

But the difference was that, while I used to handle all kinds of complaints or suggestions that go along with a hometown newspaper, here, we’ve got a hometown community that is spread around the world.

And that’s what’s really neat about this site.

There were a lot of readers at my former paper who would find me or my old NFL From the Sidelines blog from all over the world, as well, thanks to my work on the Steelers Radio Network. But not to the level we have here. truly is something special when it comes to community. We’re a community web site with a world-wide reach. Our community is Pittsburgh sports, which as many of you know, is a worldwide phenomenon. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone on Steelers trips, gone to check into the same hotel at which the team is staying and seen hundreds of Terrible Towel-waving fans. And writers in visiting press boxes that we don’t often visit around the country are always amazed at the turnout of Steelers fans in faraway cities. It’s a fun thing to see.

It’s one of the many reasons why the new job is great. I get to do this all the time, every day, as long as I want.

And I get to interact with knowledgeable fans. We’re not always going to agree on everything. That’s life. But you all make it fun.

I was reminded of this all this week while Dejan and Dali were dealing with the death of Dejan’s father. We all put a lot of time in here. But you all make it easy to do. And we thank you for that.

Thank you so much, from me, my wife Dali and our whole family, for the kindness and support shown to us in the week. It was a hard week. It was an emotional week. It will undoubtedly remain both of those for some time to come.

We’ll all be getting back to normal routines, though. I’m going to PNC Park today to cover the Pirates. My wife and kids will get back to doing their thing. Cycle of life. It all goes on.

But let me, in this context, echo Dale above: Our community here is amazing. We have some truly beautiful people subscribed to this site. — Dejan

Chris Benson and Taylor Haase team up to handle our promotions, and they do some pretty fun stuff.

Just above is Benson’s video element to pump up our NHL Draft coverage through the week. That went out on all social media platforms.

And just below is Taylor’s tweet on the company account pumping up our hockey coverage now and into the near future:

Most of this work is behind the scenes, and there’s a ton more to it than what’s here, obviously. But it makes a big difference for this business. — Dejan

Since we wrote about our newly structured military subscriptions program in Site Stuff a month ago, we’ve connected 60 veterans with one-year subscriptions that were purchased as gifts by our readers. If you’ve served or are currently serving, claim your free one-year subscription here. If you’d like to buy a gift for a veteran — all active-duty subscriptions are always on us — buy one here. — Dejan

We’ve upgraded the comments platform, with a primary goal of offering more color, more fun to the atmosphere. If you want to add a video, photo or GIF, it’s now as simple as pasting a URL into your comment. It’ll show as soon as you publish the comment.

Also, if you want to add an avatar — and you gray silhouettes know who you are — it’s as easy as clicking or tapping My Account in the menu, then Edit Profile, then uploading an image. If it doesn’t work for you for any reason, give me a shout at and I’ll be happy to help — Dejan

Mark your calendars for June 30, our annual summer bash this year will be at Moon Golf Club. You’ll enjoy the beautiful lush green spaces of the course, plus great food and drinks, sports talk and more. Our staff will be there in force. Let us know if you will, too. Taylor Haase has set up a Facebook event page where you can RSVP. — Dali

• Subscriptions are at 38,210. That’s minus-100 over the past week. We’ve expected this drop for a while, as a ton of new people signed up at this same time last year for Stanley Cup Final coverage, including the championship giveaways that followed.

• We had 355,342 page views over the past week, according to Google Analytics. Our most-hit article — exempting live files — was Dale’s report on Martavis Bryant’s possible suspension at 9,410.

• We’re at 28,991 (-5) page likes on Facebook, we’re at 28,515 (-26) followers on Twitter, we’re at 8,778 (-1) followers on Instagram, and we’re at 667 (+8) subscribers on YouTube. These figures are just for our official company account on each platform, not for us as individuals.
