EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- There's tragedy striking close to home, and then there's tragedy on the same street.
Evgeni Malkin made it known Thursday at the Penguins' practice here that he donated $60,000 to the relief fund in his hometown of Magnitogorsk, Russia, where a building collapse last week killed 39. The Penguins Foundation, the team's charitable arm, added $30,000 to Malkin's contribution.
He was visibly moved on the subject after practice:
"I love Magnitogorsk," Malkin would echo later. "It's my home."
It was then that he revealed the building was on the same street as his childhood home, describing it as "maybe a five-minute walk from there ... so close. I hope nothing like that ever happens again."
