BRADENTON, Fla. -- Utilityman Pablo Reyes was suspended for 80 games for a failed drug test, Major League Baseball announced Wednesday.

Reyes, 26, tested positive for Boldenone.

This is Reyes' first failed drug test. His suspension will begin at the start of the 2020 regular season.

Reyes is not currently on the major-league roster and was not invited to the Pirates' major-league spring training camp. He was designated for assignment on Jan. 9 when the team signed Guillermo Heredia to a major-league contract, effectively taking his spot as a backup outfield option.

He was eventually outrighted to Triple-A Indianapolis later that month when no team claimed him off waivers. He was in Pirates minor-league spring training this week.

Reyes made a good first impression as a September call-up in 2018 and hit his way to an opening day roster spot during spring training last year, but he was unable to capture the same magic as had in his first month in the big leagues.

He was optioned to Triple-A in early May and then promoted back to the majors in August. He seemed to find his swing again while in the minors and performed better in his second stint in Pittsburgh, but he evidently did not show the new front office enough for him to warrant a spot on the 40-man roster, or even an invitation to spring training as a non-roster invitee.

Reyes slashed .203/.274/.322 with two home runs and 19 RBIs over 157 major-league plate appearances last season. He also stole one base and was worth -1.0 WAR.
