The Penguins have asked for and received permission from the Kings to speak with Ron Hextall about the opening for general manager, TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported on Wednesday.

Hextall, 56, is in his first season as a senior advisor for the Kings.

Hextall was previously the general manager of the Flyers from 2014-18, and served as the assistant general manager and director of hockey operations for a year before that. He spent six seasons as the Kings' assistant general manager and vice president of hockey operations from 2006-13. His first front office role was that of a pro scout with the Flyers from 1999-02, moving to the Flyers' director of player personnel from 2002-06.

Earlier on Wednesday, TSN also reported that another top candidate for the job, Chris Drury, informed the Penguins that he was not interested in leaving the Rangers.
