Stumpf's Talking Point: What's better for 2021, more wins or losses? taken at PNC Park (Pirates)

Ben Cherington.

Before we get started, let’s just clarify that the Pirates aren’t “tanking.” They’re rebuilding, or as they refer to it, just “building.” The farm system is quickly being replenished with talent, but the major league team isn’t close to being competitive yet.

With that said, what serves the Pirates better in the long run: Winning more games this year, or losing more and getting a higher draft pick?

Getting a high pick, especially the first overall, has obvious benefits. Unlike this year, where there are two stud pitchers, Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker, both of whom are first overall pick worthy, next year has one stud prospect up top: High school outfield Elijah Green. Yes, that draft is about 15 months away, and a lot could happen between now and then, but the idea of adding a stud pitcher and outfielder into the system could pay long term dividends. Look how it turned out for the Nationals.

On the other hand, winning more games means the product this year was better. That either means the young players on the Pirates roster performed well, or the veterans who are going to hit the trade block did, which would raise their trade value. Either way, the talent pool would improve. Not to mention, actually getting through the 2021 season would be a bit easier. This current six-game losing streak is just a taste of what is to come in 2021. There are going to be plenty of loses and streaks like this to come.

Obviously the best choice would be competitive right now, but the Pirates are taking the long road. What’s better, taking a slightly longer road for potentially better returns or getting there sooner with more of the current group?

YOUR TURN: What would you rather see in 2021? A better major league product or a higher draft pick for 2022?
