CRANBERRY, Pa. -- Brian Dumoulin didn't participate in the Penguins' practice on Monday afternoon at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, but the update from Mike Sullivan after practice was a positive one.
Sullivan said that Dumoulin missed practice due to a "maintenance day."
Dumoulin appeared to be in pain after he blocked a shot with his foot in Sunday's game, though he never went to the locker room and finished the game.
The defense pairings rotated in Dumoulin's absence, with Mike Matheson taking most of the rushes with Kris Letang.
MALKIN PRACTICES,
GAME-TIME DECISION
Evgeni Malkin was on the ice for Monday's practice after missing Game 1, but did not participate in line rushes. The Penguins used the same line combinations that they used in Sunday's game:

Jared McCann-Jeff Carter-Kasperi Kapanen
Jason Zucker-Freddy Gaudreau-Evan Rodrigues
Zach Aston-Reese-Teddy Blueger-Brandon Tanev
Malkin didn't participate in the power play with either, and Jared McCann remained on the top unit in his absence.
Sullivan said after practice that Malkin remained day-to-day and would be a game-time decision for Game 2. When asked if Malkin experienced a setback after he played in the last four games of the regular season, Sullivan said that "it's just been part of the process that Geno’s been going through. He's obviously trying to get back as soon as he can for us right now.”
Malkin stayed on the ice for 45 minutes after practice ended, getting in extra work, including work with skills coach Ty Hennes.
Malkin drifted between the various stations on the ice where players were getting in extra work after practice, at one point working on faceoffs against Sidney Crosby:
There was a point in the extra work when Malkin approached Colton Sceviour and apparently asked him to work on physical contact with him (either that, or Sceviour is a bully) and Sceviour obliged for a minute or two:
Hennes, Malkin, and Teddy Blueger were the last people on the ice on Monday, after Hennes recruited Blueger to help in some drills.
DESMITH DAY-TO-DAY
Casey DeSmith was again absent from practice. DeSmith suffered a lower-body injury in Friday's practice, an injury Sullivan later said was related to the injury DeSmith suffered at the end of the regular season.
Sullivan said after practice that DeSmith didn't skate on Monday morning and remains day-to-day.

• The second power play was Matheson, John Marino, Jason Zucker, Kasperi Kapanen, Jeff Carter.
• The Islanders had an optional practice, with only five skaters who didn't participate in Game 1 working with Semyon Varlamov and Cory Schneider. Barry Trotz said Sunday that Varlamov would be "100 percent" after Monday's practice. It'll be interesting to see if the Islanders make a change in goal for Game 2, after the way Ilya Sorokin played on Sunday.
