Pirates acquire one prospect from failed Anderson trade with Phillies taken at PNC Park (Pirates)

Abrahan Gutierrez in June in Clearwater, Fla.

While the Tyler Anderson trade with the Phillies fell through Tuesday, the Pirates were still able to acquire one of the prospects they were supposed to receive in that deal.

Per sources, the Pirates have acquired minor-league catcher Abrahan Gutierrez from the Phillies in exchange for minor-league pitcher Braeden Ogle.

That deal with the Phillies fell through after the other prospect in the deal, right-hander Christian Hernandez, did not pass the Pirates' standards on the medical report.

The Pirates ended up trading Anderson to the Mariners late Tuesday night instead.

They were obviously enamored with Gutierez though, and with the Phillies needing bullpen help, they decided to take a flyer on the Pirates' Class AAA pitcher.

Ogle was one of the better left-handed pitching prospects in the 2016 draft, being ranked by Baseball America as the No. 69 draft prospect that year. However, he never really clicked as a starter with the Pirates and transitioned into the bullpen. He has posted a 3.13 ERA and 42 strikeouts over 31 2/3 innings this season.

His highest ranking in the Pirates' farm system is when Baseball America rated him as the Pirates' No. 20 prospect in 2018. He was invited to the alternate training site in Altoona, Pa. last season, but did not reach the majors.

Gutierrez, 21, is having a fine season for the Phillies' Class Low-A affiliate in Clearwater, Fla., slashing .288/.420/.429 with five home runs and 32 RBIs.

DK Pittsburgh Sports was told by an evaluator that he has "elite zone control," as evidenced by him having more walks (37) than strikeouts (31) this season.

Gutierrez was one of 13 former Braves prospects who became free agents in 2017 when Major League Baseball penalized Atlanta for circumventing international signing rules. He wound up signing with the Phillies that December for $550,000.

Both Gutierrez and Ogle are Rule 5 eligible this winter, and with a roster crunch expected, it looks doubtful that either would be added to the 40-man. However, as a source points out, it's a lot easier to stash a low-A catcher than a Class AAA left-handed reliever.

The trade deadline is at 4 p.m. Friday. You can follow along with everything that is happening in our live file here.
