ALTOONA, Pa. -- A third Penn State basketball player has entered the transfer portal, this one a key reserve who showed flashes of great potential during his freshman season.
Evan Mahaffey, a 6-foot-6 swingman, is now in the portal, according to On3.

Mahaffey appeared in 34 games this season for the Nittany Lions, all off the bench. He averaged 2.8 points and 1.7 rebounds, but also showed his potential when he scored a season-high 12 points against Indiana in early January. That was his lone double-digit scoring game of the season.
Mahaffey is the third Penn State player to enter the transfer portal, joining guard Dallion Johnson and forward Caleb Dorsey.
Micah Shrewsberry left last week to become head coach at Notre Dame. Whoever replaces him will face a serious roster crunch in year one.
Here's why:
Penn State is losing seniors Jalen Pickett, Andrew Funk, Camren Wynter and Myles Dread, while Seth Lundy declared early for the NBA draft. Add in the three players entering the transfer portal, and that's eight players who will not be returning.
They also represent eight of the top 11 scorers on the team this season.
Then there's the recruiting crunch, as well, as Penn State already has lost commit Carey Booth, and Braeden Shrewsberry is expected to follow his father to Notre Dame.
