Freeze Frame: Delay conquers the monster taken in Boston (Pirates)

Jason Delay homers in the fourth inning against the Red Sox at Fenway Park Monday.

BOSTON -- When the Pirates signed Austin Hedges this offseason and gave Jason Delay the nod as the backup catcher to start the season, it was clear they were prioritizing defense at the position over potential offensive output.

That doesn't mean they can't help on offense, as Delay's solo shot in the fourth wound up being the difference in the Pirates' 7-6 win over the Red Sox at Fenway Park Monday.

Playing in front of his parents and other family members, Delay caught a four-seamer that stayed inside, turned on it, and hit it over the infamous Green Monster in left field. And he did it all with his parents and plenty of other family in the stands.

"It was a really special moment," a smiling Delay said afterwards.

"That was sick to see Delay do that," Bryan Reynolds said. "I think his parents were here. I think he’s got some other family out here. That they could see him put one over the Green Monster is pretty cool."

Delay's homer also came the same day Reynolds, his old college teammate back at Vanderbilt, hit a pair of home runs. The ball was flying out of Fenway Park, and the Pirates needed every one of those three homers.

As Derek Shelton joked postgame, the "Vandy boys" helped lead the way for the win.

"We were joking throughout the game that we better get a shoutout on the Vandy baseball account," Delay said. "It's always nice to get a win, for us both to be able to contribute to it is awesome."

Sadly, Vanderbilt's social media didn't comply. Perhaps they would have if it would have been Delay's first career homer instead of his second.
