RICHMOND, Va. -- The "Freak Show" Pirates were a blast to follow in 1997, despite the fact that they scarcely scratched above .500 all season, and ultimately fell short of an NL Central title or even a winning record.
Not much to celebrate for a less-moribund franchise, but considering the teams that took the field for the PBC in the following decade and a half, with scarcely a squad even in contention past Memorial Day, it's easy to understand why this scrappy, bargain-basement bunch remains so fondly remembered among the Bucs' long-suffering fanbase!
