RICHMOND, Va. -- What is it with the Pirates and monumental pitching performances that nonetheless leave their auteurs with no official credit? Harvey Haddix's no-no that wasn't is the most egregious example, to be sure, but how about this gem from Vernon Law four years earlier?
Law made the start on short rest, and gave up just two walks and four hits over nine extra innings to keep the Pirates' hopes alive. When he finally was removed for a pinch hitter in the 18th (after successfully lobbying to stay in the game several occasions), manager Fred Haney himself acknowledged the bitter unfairness of Law missing out on getting credit for the eventual victory.
