Erie Otters Owner James Waters unexpectedly died in his sleep Friday. He was 73. The family said they will release a formal statement and tribute to Mr. Waters at a later date.
The Otters released a brief statement saying Mr. Waters' passing has left "a profound void in the lives of his family, friends and the Canadian hockey and broadcasting communities. ... [He was] an extraordinary husband, father and friend to all who knew him."
Mr. Waters purchased the Otters of the major-juniors Ontario Hockey League in 2015, the season after Connor McDavid graduated from the team to the NHL. It was a lifelong dream for Mr. Waters to own the team and the Otters won their second-ever OHL Championship in 2017, with a roster that featured future NHL players Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Strome, Warren Foegele, Darren and Taylor Raddysh, and Anthony Cirelli.
May he Rest in Peace.
