The Erie SeaWolves are getting a complete rebrand, courtesy of "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver." Two weeks ago on the MAX program, Oliver, enamored of its eccentricities, did a long-form segment on minor-league baseball, after which he offered, “We are willing to use all our resources and stupidity to give one Minor League Baseball team a total rebrand, We will give you a new team name. A new mascot. We will even throw you a theme night. It will be personalized and it will be bespoke.” However, as a condition, he added “you can’t ask us any questions, give us any notes and you have to do what we come up with.”
Turns out 47 teams thought that was a good idea, the SeaWolves among them. Sunday, the Double-A affiliate of the Tigers was announced as the winner.
SeaWolves president Greg Coleman said Monday, "I think it's a tremendous opportunity ... to showcase Erie and showcase the team we have here and the success we've enjoyed. So, we're thrilled. ... There’s so many things to love about where we live. From a team perspective, there’s benefits of having your brand ... put out there on such a widespread basis. I think it’ll be something that will bring interest among the fans and is something that brings something new to the team."
Coleman has no idea what the show has in store, "but we do know that there are a lot of things to love about Erie and they will have a lot to choose from. Erie is rife with opportunities, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with."
The whole thing needs the approval of Major League Baseball, which owns the minor leagues, and Coleman said an initial meeting is set for Wednesday for MLB to hear out the show's proposals and discuss the nuts ad bolts, like licensing agreements.
The SeaWolves have existed in Erie since 1995, when they joined the short-season New York–Penn League. (At one point, the franchise was the Johnstown Steal of the independent Pioneer League.) SeaWolves alumni include Justin Verlander and former Pirates outfielder Jose Guillen.
Any Erie subscribers have any cool ideas? Of course, the rest of the Lunatics can join in on the fun.
