Jack Nicklaus does not like the "walk and talk" on-course interviews that happen on modern broadcasts. After Golf Channel's on-course reporter Rex Hoggard interviewed tournament leader Ben Griffin after he teed off on the 17th hole, Nicklaus, who was visiting the broadcast booth, let loose on it:
“I mean, seriously, here’s a guy who's leading the golf tournament, he’s just hit the edge of the rough, he’s got a very difficult shot on a very difficult hole, and you’re talking to him about stuff that totally takes his mind off of what he was doing. How would you think [Ben] Hogan would respond to that question? You would not have any teeth left if you did, He’d hit you right in the face with it.”
The Golden Bear pines for the golden age. It is the sad reality of the modern game — it has to be sold; players have to be media savvy. It's in all sports. So it goes.
